For non-musicians, music seems like a foreign language. This week on Creatively Speaking, we interview Andrea Saparoff, composer at Saparoff Music. Andrea has worked with well-known clients such as Cheerio’s, VW, Nike, EA, and more. In this episode Andrea discusses how to create the best music for advertising spots.
She also discusses some of the biggest challenges she has faced when composing music for advertising.
What you’ll learn
- How music plays a crucial role in advertising.
- How do you become a composer?
- What makes a great musical score for advertising spots
Andrea Saparoff composes original music and sound design for a wide variety of creative applications. As president of Acme Arts Inc., a woman-owned business certified by the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) and corporate parent of Saparoff Music, Andrea gets as much creative pleasure from scoring 30-second commercials, mobile phone ringtones and video game trailers as she does from writing a feature-length dramatic movie score.
A sampling of her international commercial and media clients include: EA, Nike, Nissan, Volkswagen, Hyundai, Infiniti, Lexus, Kellogg, Cheerios, United Way, Foster Farms, Nestlé, Samsonite, Enterprise Car Rental and Nokia.
Andrea has scored a variety of movies, TV themes, pilots and specials for ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox Broadcasting, Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, Disney Channel and ESPN, to name a few. Recent film and TV projects include: “Dear Prudence,” starring Jane Seymour for Hallmark Channel; “A Perfect Romance” for Lifetime Network; and “Borrowing Time,” a feature documentary directed by Robert Black.
Andrea is a classically-trained musician who regularly immerses herself in researching, understanding and listening to a disparate range of musical styles—from hip hop to Tuvan throat singing. While she is perfectly comfortable writing for a traditional orchestra, she is particularly passionate about mixing unusual sounds, textures and the latest in sampled ear candy to create powerful, eclectic music that is both accessible and refreshingly unique. As someone who creates music to emotionally enhance visuals, she is committed to collaborating with the writers, directors, producers and others on each creative team. She feels collaboration is what makes the whole process fun, creatively rewarding and highly successful—for everyone in the mix.

I am a THINKER. I like to solve puzzles and crack codes. The fun part is finding a problem that needs to be solved and then doing it in a unique, smart and clever way. I am a WRITER. Expressing a vision, emotion or message to an audience is a privilege and one that should never be taken for granted. I am a NETWORKER. I believe everyone is here to help someone else. The more people you take the time to get to know is one person you can potentially help and perhaps if you’re lucky, can even help you someday. If nothing else, everyone brings something new into your life if only for a fleeting moment. I am CREATIVE. Organized chaos is my norm as I navigate my way through finding innovative ways to tackle projects. I’ve never been one to color inside the lines. I am a DOER. I like to get things done and expect that of others. I run a million miles a minute and that’s how I like it. I am a MULTI-TASKER. I usually have at least 10 different projects going at any given time. Variety is what makes life (and jobs) fun and interesting!Follow Debra on Shocase
